(umm, did anyone know there was one?)
According to this article, tomatoes are thought to have sickened 171 people throughout 19 states recently. How come we knew nothing about it? The article speculates that in part, the recent E.coli scare was widely publicized because they were able to quickly identify the culprit (bagged spinach) and thus affect change. In this case, they still aren't sure if it was tomatoes and, if so, where they came from. My guess is this was also quieter because E.coli kills, whereas salmonella, though certainly no walk in the park, is rarely fatal.
Anyway, you can relax now and go back to slicing, roasting and canning those lovely Early Girls again.
(p.s. If you're wondering why I've started to track news-y items like this, it's because (1) knowing more about where my food comes from and who produces it has made me more interested in the ways in which the industrial food chain is flawed, and (2) I am a complete, total, obsessive/compulsive card-carrying germaphobe.)
