And that's no hyperbole. This simple trick is for those of you who, like me, occasionally find yourselves behind schedule on a dinner party and, with less than 24 hours to go, realize that you need red, ripe tomatoes and juicy, ripe peaches -- note the emphasis -- but have neglected to purchase any produce and can find nothing but hard, unripened specimens. First, do not despair! Secondly, simply pull over at the first produce stand or market you see, e.g. The Fruit Basket on route 37 leading home from Napa. Buy what you need, take the unripened fruit home and put it in a paper bag with the top rolled closed, and leave it overnight.
PRESTO!
Ripe tomatoes and peaches will greet you in the morning with sunshine-y faces, the birds will chirp a sweet song and all will be right with the world.
This also works for avocados, though not quite as fast.
