“To Catherine – At Six”
I remember it so well
Just six summers ago
The August sun was hot
Casting shadows in a stately row.
With a lusty yell and baby blue eyes
Soft hands and a charming smile
You walked into my heart
And took a seat in queenly style.
Six years have passed
And you have grown
With pigtails and ponytails
And long talks on the phone.
So now get on with the business at hand
You have a whole year before seven
And I have a year to watch you grow
And catch a small glimpse of heaven.
Grandpa

Tears ... tears ... from someone who barely 'knows' you let alone your grandfather. What a gift, his poem, now that he does indeed watch from heaven ...

How lucky you are to have a grandfather who wrote you a poem! It brought tears to my eyes.
I lost my first grandparent in March and I wasn't prepared for the heartache. Sending warm thoughts to you and your family during this difficult time.

Thank you to everyone who has written or kept me in your thoughts. I am so very, very sad, but death is a part of life, and I am trying to accept that by celebrating my grandfather's life. What better way to do that than to share with you a poem he lovingly wrote so many years ago...

I love that you are celebrating your grandpa's life. My love to you and your family. (By the way, I also love that he wrote you such an amazing poem.)

My sincerest condolences. It is never easy. I still miss mine 10 years later. The poem is wonderful. He left you with something beautiful.
