I am sitting here in my darkened apartment; outside, the gray sky is pregnant with rain that has just started to fall. I'm off for San Diego in a few hours for a girls weekend with R. and R. (two friends, not rest and relaxation - although all will be plentiful). It promises to be rainier there still, and our plans to go surfing, roller skating and hiking may be ditched in favor of movies. We shall see. Either way, we plan to eat well - brunch places in La Jolla have already been scouted, likewise a tapas place for dinner with salsa dancing for dessert, and world famous fish tacos will be lunch every day. My camera and my appetite are already packed. Now for the shoes... (sigh) a girl's work is never done.
Last night Mr. Food Musings and I ordered Chinese. Like everyone, we are convinced that we order from the best Chinese place in the city: Fountain Court in the Richmond. They specialize in cuisine from Shanghai, so you won't find all the usual suspects on the menu. Those that are familiar are nothing like the cheap meat, gummy noodles and soupy sauces you're used to. The cashew chicken arrives bursting with soft, chewy cashews that surrendered their crunch during cooking, flat pieces of succulent white meat chicken, and a barely-there sauce whose heat kicks in once you swallow. We also ordered vegetarian pot stickers; crunchy on the outside, and soft with steamed cabbage on the inside, they come with a combination of soy sauce and chili oil for dipping. I eat mine with my hands. If we were there in person this time of year, we'd go for the roasted Dungeness crab. The fluffy white rice they serve is unmistakably jasmine: its delicate scent wafts out of the plastic container as soon as it's opened. Quality is the name of the game, but prices are reasonable.
On another note, the Houston Chronicle emailed me yesterday and there's a good chance they're going to publish one of my recipes for an article on foolproof recipes! I don't want to scoop them - that wouldn't be very nice - so I'll wait until March 30 and then publish the recipe here for you.
