Bakery from heaven. Small slice of gay Par-ee right here on our doorstep. Reliant on organic, local ingredients alone. (sigh) What's not to love?
I was down at the Ferry Building and couldn't resist nipping into Miette, the oh-so-cute dessert bakery. From the whimsical, candy-colored cake plates lining the shelves (I confess, I've been coveting them for ages) to the mini cookies in flavors like quintessential chocolate chip or butter with quince thumbprints, sweetly wrapped in a crinkly polka-dot pouch, to the little cakes with icing that looks downright polished, everything about this place screams out GIRL! It'll remind you of the dainty tea parties you never had as a kid.
On this visit, I was feeling a bit Proustian so my splurge was madeleines. Miette's overstuffed, cakey versions of the usually elegant treat come in two varieties, traditional buttery and chocolate with the merest hint of lemon. Lip-smacking good and screaming out for a cold glass of milk.
Or, in true Parisian style, for a bowlful of café au lait.
Miette, San Francisco Ferry Building, 415-837-0300
Checked their website & can't wait to order by mail. Yum-Oh!!
